Paying for good child care can be a struggle. In fact, child care is probably the second largest expense in your budget after rent or mortgage. Child care is costly, but you may be able to reduce your child care expenses or get some help paying your child care bills.

What Kind of Help is Available?

Each type of financial assistance for child care has different qualifications, like income level, employment status, or residency, so make sure you get all the facts. Some of the options in Ohio are:

  • State Subsidized Child Care is for parents who are working or in school. You can apply for help to pay for your child care in the county where you live by contacting the county department of Job and Family Services (see list below). You must choose a licensed child care center, school-age program, head start, or a home provider that is certified by the CDJFS in order to get help. You will still be required to pay for part of your child care, called a fee or co-payment. Your eligibility and co-pay is based on your income, family size and how many children that you have in child care. You can view eligibility charts & application on the ODJFS website. You can contact your local jobs & family services office at:

Stark: 330-452-4661
Summit: 330-643-7686
Trumbull: 330-675-2000

  • Your family may also qualify for the Child Care Earned Income Tax Credit. The Earned Income Tax Credit also called EITC or more simply EIC is a credit for people who earn low-to-moderate incomes. EITC can reduce your taxes, and can mean a refund. In simple terms, working families and individuals keep more of what they earn. More Information can be found HERE.
  • Head Start and Early Head Start is an additional option for families. Head Start is a national program that promotes school readiness by enhancing the social and cognitive development of children through the provision of educational, health, nutritional, social and other services to enrolled children and families. Eligibility is based upon family income and household size. For enrollment information contact your county head start office at:

What Will Child Care Cost You?

Many factors affect the cost of child care: the child's age, the type of child care setting, the location, the number of hours care is needed--to name just a few. Quality child care and early learning environments have expenses associated with maintaining up to date materials; centers and family child care providers who are working toward accreditation or other credentials incur additional expenditures. Child Care Connection has developed a list of average weekly cost of care. Remember care in your city may be higher or lower than the county average.

NACCRRA’s ChildCareAware offers a great child care budgeting tool to begin estimating your child care expenses.

Rates are based upon full time weekly enrollment unless otherwise noted
